What are microglia?
Microglia are a special type of cell found only in the central nervous system (CNS: brain, retina, and spinal cord). These multi-tasking cells manage neuronal connections, fight infections, repair damage, remove debris, and regulate neurons, myelin, and blood vessels. Under normal physiological circumstances and acute pathology, microglia are central to maintaining brain health.
However, chronically-activated microglia can damage the brain by excessive phagocytosis, release of oxidant and inflammatory cytokines, or by failing to maintain the brain. Thus, microglia may contribute to traumatic, ischaemic, psychiatric, and neurodegenerative diseases.
Publications on microglia have been growing at an exponential rate since 1990, making it increasingly difficult to stay up to date with the current literature.
